Call to Worship

Psalm 100, NRSV

One: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Many: Worship the Lord with gladness;
come into the presence with singing.
One: Know that the Lord is God.
It is the Lord that made us, and we are of God;
We are the Lord’s people, and the sheep of God’s pasture…
Many: Give thanks to the Lord, bless God’s name.
One: For the Lord is good;
Many: God’s steadfast love endures forever,
and God’s faithfulness to all generations.

Prayer

Lord Open Unto Me from “Meditations of the Heart” by Howard Thurman

Open unto me, light for my darkness
Open unto me, courage for my fear
Open unto me, hope for my despair
Open unto me, peace for my turmoil
Open unto me, joy for my sorrow
Open unto me, strength for my weakness
Open unto me, wisdom for my confusion
Open unto me, forgiveness for my sins
Open unto me, tenderness for my toughness
Open unto me, love for my hates
Open unto me, Thy Self for myself
Lord, Lord, open unto me!

Scripture

Luke 10:29-37, NRSV

29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.
31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.
34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’
36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Communion

Liturgy used from African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded by Rev. Richard Allen.

All:
We that do truly and earnestly repent of our sins,
and are in love and charity with our neighbor,
and intend to lead a new life,
following the commandments of God,
and walking forth in God’s holy ways,
Let us draw near with faith and take this holy sacrament to our comfort.

Lawrence:
In the silence, Make our humble confession to Almighty God.
Let us bow our heads in confession:

Silent Confession

Lawrence:
Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful God, for the sake of Jesus Christ; forgive us all that is past and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please You in the newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
(People may pray in the language with which they are most comfortable.)

The Prayer of Consecration
Lawrence:
Almighty God, who through Your tender mercy gave Your only Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, who made thereby His oblation of Himself, once offered, a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did institute in this holy gospel command us to continue a perpetual memory of that Christ’s precious life and death until His coming again; hear us, merciful God, we most humbly beseech You, and grant that we, receiving these Your elements of bread and wine, according to our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of Christ’s death and passion, may be partakers of Christ’s most blessed body and blood;

Who on the same night that He was betrayed Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples saying, Take, eat, this is My body which is broken for you. This do in remembrance of Me.

Likewise after supper Jesus took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them saying, Drink all of it, for this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins; do this, as often as you shall drink it, in remembrance of me.

These are the gifts of God for the people of God—all is now ready.

Music During Communion

I Know It Was the Blood

I know it was the blood
I know it was the blood
I know it was the blood for me
One day when I was lost
Jesus died upon the cross
And I know it was the blood for me

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Lawrence: O Lord, here we offer and present to you ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto You; We ask that ALL who have partaken of this Holy Communion may be filled with Your grace and heavenly benediction, accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Christ our Lord; Amen.

Closing Song

I Need You to Survive

I need you, you need me.
We’re all a part of God’s body.
Stand with me, agree with me.
We’re all a part of God’s body.

It is God’s will, that every need be supplied.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.

I pray for you, You pray for me.
I love you, I need you to survive.
I won’t harm you with words from my mouth.
I love you, I need you to survive.

It is God’s will, that every need be supplied.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.
You are important to me, I need you to survive.
