“This is the Day” (UMH #657)

Greeting

Leader: May grace and peace be yours in abundance
in the knowledge of God and of Christ our redeemer.
We have come to lift each other up before the Lord
that we might receive healing wholeness.
Let those who seek God’s healing
open their hearts to the Spirit of the Lord.

Bless God, O my soul!
All: And all that is within me, bless God’s holy name!

Leader: Bless God, O my soul, and forget not all God’s benefits.
All: God forgives our sins, and heals our hearts.

Leader: God redeems our lives from the pit,
and crowns us with steadfast love and mercy.
All: God satisfies us with good as long as we live
so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Amen.

Opening Song

“Hakuna wakaita sa Jesu” – Traditional Shona

Hakuna wakaita sa Jesu
Hakuna wakaita sa ye
Hakuna wakaita sa Jesu
Haku, haku china

I’m running, running
Searching, searching
I’m turning, turning
Searching, searching
I’m searching, searching, everywhere
Haku, haku china

Confession and Pardon

Leader: Christ invites us all to the table of healing and grace.
We come, seeking to love God with our whole hearts.
We come, repenting of our sins.
We come, seeking to live in peace with one another.
Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

All: Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have failed to be an obedient church.
We have not done your will,
we have broken your law,
we have rebelled against your love,
we have not loved our neighbors,
and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
Forgive us, we pray.
Free us for joyful obedience,
through Jesus Christ. Amen.

All pray in silence.

Leader: Hear the good news:
Christ loved and redeemed us while we were yet sinners.
That proves God’s love toward us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

People to leader: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

All: Glory to God. Amen.

Scripture Reading – James 5:13-20

13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15The prayer of faith will save the sick, and God will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. 17Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.
19 My siblings, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, 20you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner’s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Leader: The Word of God for the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God.

Anthem

“Every Praise” Hezekiah Walker

Every praise is to our God
Every word of worship with one accord
Every praise, every praise is to our God

Sing hallelujah to our God
Glory hallelujah is due our God
Every praise, every praise is to our God

Sacrament of Holy Communion and Liturgy of Anointing

Leader: God be with you.
All: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to God.
Leader: Let us give thanks to God, our Maker.
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
almighty God, creator of heaven and earth.
In the beginning, when darkness covered the face of the earth
and nothing existed but chaos,
your Spirit swept across the waters.
You spoke but a word, and light was separated from darkness.

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Singing:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your child Jesus Christ:
who lived among us and knew pain and suffering;
who called all who were burdened and heavy laden and gave them rest;
who healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners;
who cast out demons and showed us the way to you through faith;
who took our suffering upon himself,
that we might be cleansed of our sins and receive eternal life.
By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection,
you gave birth to your Church,
delivered us from slavery to sin and death,
and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

On the night in which Christ gave himself for us, he took bread,
gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”

When the supper was over he took the cup,
gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Drink from this, all of you; this is my cup of the new covenant,
poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving
as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Singing:
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

O God, the giver of health and salvation, pour out your Spirit on us gathered here,
And on the gifts: bread, wine, and oil.
Make the bread and cup be for us the body and blood of Christ,
that we may experience Christ’s redeeming love and grace.
May the oil be for us a sign of healing,
that those who receive anointing may experience wholeness.

By your Spirit, God, heal us in body, mind, and spirit,
cleansing away all that would separate us from you.
By your Spirit, God, make us one with Christ,
one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world,
until Christ comes in victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,
all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and for ever.

Singing:
Amen. Amen. Amen.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
