  3. I’d rather have jesus

Heart and soul

I never want anything in my life to take your place
I never want to live by any other grace
My longing and my heart’s desire is to see your face
O lord and become a friend of God

I love you day and night
I love you all of life
I love you lord heart and soul
I long to be a friend of God

I never want anything in my life to take your place
I never want to live by any other grace
My longing and my heart’s desire is to see your face
O lord and become a friend of God

I love you day and night
I love you all of life
I love you lord heart and soul
I long to be a friend of God

Since Christ my soul from sin set free

Since Christ my soul from sin set free,
This world has been a heaven to me;
And ’mid earth’s sorrows and its woe,
’Tis heaven my Jesus here to know.

Since Christ my soul from sin set free,
This world has been a heaven to me;
And ’mid earth’s sorrows and its woe,
’Tis heaven my Jesus here to know.

Hallelujah! yes, ’tis heaven,
’Tis heaven to know my sins forgiven;
On land or sea, what matters where?
Where Jesus is, ’tis heaven there.

What matters where on earth we dwell?
On mountain top, or in the dell,
In cottage, or a mansion fair,
Where Jesus is, ’tis heaven there.

What matters where on earth we dwell?
On mountain top, or in the dell,
In cottage, or a mansion fair,
Where Jesus is, ’tis heaven there.

Hallelujah! yes, ’tis heaven,
’Tis heaven to know my sins forgiven;
On land or sea, what matters where?
Where Jesus is, ’tis heaven there.

I’d rather have Jesus

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I’d rather be His than have riches untold
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or land
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand

Than to be the king of a vast domain
And be held in sin’s dread sway
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I’d rather be His than have riches untold
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or land
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand

Than to be the king of a vast domain
And be held in sin’s dread sway
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today

Call to Worship

We are the church of God:
We gather to worship.
God has given us God’s word:
We gather to learn from God.
God has filled us with God’s power:
We gather to serve others through that power.
God has called us into God’s family:
We gather to share our lives with others.
God has put God’s words on our lips:
We gather to tell the world about God.
God has given us God’s Spirit:
We gather to celebrate.
God has poured out God’s abundance on us.
We gather to share God’s goodness with others.
God has freed us from our past:
We gather to move forward. We are the church of God. Amen

Opening Prayer

Gracious God,
As we gather in this Chapel under the theme of Diakonia and Service, we come before you with hearts full of gratitude and a desire to embody your message of hope. In our quest to be a united Drew community, guide us in breaking down barriers and constructing bridges that connect us with one another.
May your love be evident in our actions as we strive to extend a welcoming embrace to all who seek belonging. Empower us to serve as a starting point that imparts the timeless foundation of our faith while maintaining an outward focus on those who are in search of truth and meaning.
In this precious moment in the Chapel, we surrender ourselves to your guidance and dedicate our shared journey of service to the enrichment of our community.
In Jesus Name We pray. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
Psalm 51:1-10
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you alone, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.
5 Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me. 6 You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right[b] spirit within me.
Leader: The Word of God for the People of God.
All: Thanks be to God

Musical Response

“True Joy”

Walking down a righteous road,
even if it doesn’t shine
With a heart of thankfulness,
though I don’t have much to give
Sharing what little I have,
with the strength that You provide
This is what happiness is,
what true joy is for me

Thought there’s much to cry about,
having grace so I can pray
Even when all seems unfair,
bearing with the thought of You
Lifting my short and small life
to live according to Your will
This is what happiness is,
what true joy is for me

This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Something that the world can’t see,
the gift of God for me
This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Walking down the path of life,
as a child of God
This is what life’s true joy is

Thought there’s much to cry about,
having grace to pray to you
Even when all seems unfair,
bearing with the thought of You
Lifting my short and small life
to live according to Your will
This is what happiness is,
what true joy is for me

This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Something that the world can’t see,
the gift of God for me
This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Walking down the path of life,
as a child of God
This is what life’s true joy is

This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Something that the world can’t see,
the gift of God for me
This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Walking down the path of life,
as a child of God
This is what life’s true joy is

This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Something that the world can’t see,
the gift of God for me

This is true joy,
this is life’s true joy
Walking down the path of life,
as a child of God

This is what life’s true joy is
This is what life’s true joy is

Sacrament of Holy Communion

(Liturgy adapted from The United Methodist Book of Worship)

God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to God.
Let us give God our thanks.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
almighty God, creator of heaven and earth.
In the beginning your Spirit moved over the face of the waters.
You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life.
When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast.
Your Spirit came upon prophets and teachers,
anointing them to speak your Word.

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

(Singing) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your child Jesus Christ.
At his baptism in the Jordan your Spirit descended upon him
and declared him your Beloved.
Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
and to announce that the time had come
when you would save your people.
Jesus healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners.
By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection,
you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death,
and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.
When Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always,
baptizing us with the Holy Spirit and with fire, as on the Day of Pentecost.

On the night in which Jesus gave himself up, he took bread,
gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”

When the supper was over Jesus took the cup,
gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

On the day of resurrection,
Jesus was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread,
and in the power of your Holy Spirit your Church has continued
in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup.

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving
as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

(Singing) Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,
and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ,
that we may be for the world the body of Christ,
redeemed by his blood and empowered by the gifts of the Spirit.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ,
one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world,
showing forth the fruit of the Spirit until Christ comes in final victory,
and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,
all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.

(Singing) Amen. Amen. Amen.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessing

Sending Song

“Draw the Circle Wide” – Miller/Light

Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.
Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.
No one stands alone, we’ll stand side by side.
Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.

Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.
Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.
No one stands alone, we’ll stand side by side.
Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.

Draw the circle wide, draw it wider still.
Let this be our song: no one stands alone.
Standing side by side, draw the circle, draw the circle wide.

In your sadness and in your grief,
From all the pain, It seems there’s no relief
We will hold you Until the storm subsides
We’ll draw the circle, draw the circle wide!

Draw the circle wide, draw it wider still.
Let this be our song: no one stands alone.
Standing side by side, draw the circle, draw the circle wide.

Draw the circle wide, draw it wider still.
Let this be our song: no one stands alone.
Standing side by side, draw the circle, draw the circle wide.
Draw the circle, draw the circle wide.
